Introduction

Micromax provides automation solutions to Australian industries for over 40 years. Evocode teamed up with Redfox Media to tackle some unique challenges in the business and launch a new integrated responsive website.

The Challenge

Micromax has a intricate product catalog with many different automation parts and pieces. These include sensors, switches, power supplies, indicators, which translate to mission critical parts for the companies that depend on them. Each part and piece can look identical to another, only differing in voltage, power rating, or filter size. Because of this it was often very difficult to find the right product and even more difficult to find product accessories that are compatible.

We set out to drastically improve the catalog discovery experience by bundling similar product lines and bringing the product accessories to the forefront.

Faceted Search Engine

We migrated the old catalog to a new eCommerce engine that we could utilize to fully develop the complex functionality this project requires. We started by building a highly custom faceted search engine. User experience was paramount and we knew the traditional faceted search was going to be too slow for this catalog. We built a javascript based faceted search, preloading the catalog on the user’s browser, to offer instant filtering, sorting, and pagination.

To further improve the user experience we disabled the non-relevant facet conbinations to avoid 0 results and ensured that a matching product would be found within 2 clicks. As this is a fully responsive website, the new catalog search has had a profound impact on mobile, where the instantaneous filtering has had tremendous impact. The new catalog experience has truly set Micromax apart from its competition.

Micromax had a fulfillment issue where thousands of parts and pieces needed to be purchased and fulfilled separately. We set out to tackle this problem by making it easy to bundle accessories with the purchase of your original product. The end result is a set of bundled products in a single order, which saves considerable time during the order fulfillment process. Each one of these accessories could be purchased separately or as part of a set of bundled products. To complicate matters, each product can have options (sizes, formats, etc), special pricing for different customer groups, product and category discounts, and differently delivery timelines for each product. Then we need to make it all work on mobile.

We overcame all of these obstacles and delivered one of the most sophisticated solutions we have ever built and deployed to an eCommerce website. Adding accessories on the desktop can all be done within the same viewport, while on mobile we pop up a series of modals to configure. The accessories get saved to your account so you can later revisit and continue where you left off. The pricing and delivery times get calculated, automatically, and instantaneously upon every change.

The Result

We have received incredible feedback from the Micromax team. The order fulfillment process and catalog discovery has exceeded all expectations and beyond. The new website has revolutionized how they do business online for years to come.
